Today youâre simply going to put ten minutes between wanting a cigarette and having one.
Youâll disrupt the automatic habit of lighting up, and again tell your brain to wait. It can be done. YOU are the one whoâs in control now, not the nicotine master.
One technique you might like to try is: when you are about to smoke, stop and note the time on the clock. Then delay lighting up for as long as possible. Ten minutes should be the absolute minimum. Try setting the alarm on your phone or using an egg timer. Itâs not long to wait at all (especially now you know the craving only lasts a couple of minutes) and if you go and busy yourself doing something else, youâll hardly notice it passing. Whenever the urge creeps up on you, say to yourself, âJust hang on a few minutes,â as you would to a persistent child. After ten minutes you may find the urge has passed and you donât light up at all. As you go through the day you may be able to delay for a little longer, 11 minutes then 12, as you realize the craving does subside and other things can intercede and fill the vacuum.
Sheila, 39: the first time I did this I grabbed an apple instead of a cigarette and made it last the full ten minutes. It was a really strange experience, eating it so slowly and dragging it out, chewing for ages. But I found I enjoyed every bite and it really calmed me down, too! Afterwards I felt much more relaxed; I couldnât remember the reason Iâd reached for my cigarettes (someone had wound me up, I think) and then felt quite proud of myself so didnât even have that cigarette afterwards. I got through a load of apples when I was trying to give up, but kept telling myself it was better than smoking!
